Most hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers dissolve slowly on their own.

At The Skin Company, we’ve seen firsthand how filler confusion affects confidence, which is why we prioritize education as much as aesthetics.

This guide will help you understand the science behind filler dissolution and what your next best steps might be.

Will Filler Dissolve On Its Own?

A dermal filler is a soft, injectable gel that restores volume, smooths lines, and enhances facial features.

While often thought of as simple “plumping,” fillers can also lift the midface, soften under-eye shadows, refine jawlines, and subtly upturn tired-looking mouths.

But not all fillers are the same. The key distinction, hyaluronic acid (HA) vs. non-HA fillers, matters greatly if you’re wondering whether your filler will dissolve on its own.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar your body naturally makes to keep skin hydrated. HA fillers mimic this, making them safe, effective, and reversible with hyaluronidase if needed.

Most last 6–18 months, depending on the type and placement.

Examples you might recognize:

  • Juvéderm (Ultra, Voluma, Volbella, etc.)
  • Restylane (Lyft, Kysse, Refyne, etc.)

These are my go-to tools for most areas of the face: under-eyes, lips, nasolabial folds, cheeks, chin, and jawline.

They give beautiful results and allow us to course-correct if needed, which is why they’re our preferred option for filler.

Non-HA Fillers

Now here’s where things get a little trickier. Non-HA fillers work differently, and they do not dissolve on their own, nor can we dissolve them with an enzyme.

Take Sculptra, for example. It’s made from poly-L-lactic acid, which stimulates your body to produce collagen over time. It’s great for volume loss and can give a soft, natural fullness, but once it’s in, it’s in. You have to wait for your body to metabolize it, which can take years.

Then there’s Radiesse, made from calcium hydroxylapatite. This filler also encourages collagen production and is often used for hands, cheeks, or jawline support. It can last well over a year, and again, it cannot be dissolved.

Why The Type Matters

So, will your filler dissolve on its own? That depends entirely on what kind you had.

  • HA filler? Yes, over time.
  • Non-HA filler? No dissolving. You’re counting on your body to eventually absorb it.

This is why I always walk my clients through what we’re injecting, why, and what the exit plan looks like. Because yes, sometimes, we change our minds.

The more reversible your filler is, the more freedom you have to adjust along the way. That flexibility isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about peace of mind.

Do Fillers Ever Fully Dissolve? Here’s What Really Happens

It depends. Yes, some fillers, specifically hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, can dissolve on their own. However, sometimes, filler can linger for years.

I’ve seen clients come in with lingering puffiness they thought was aging or allergies, only to find, via ultrasound or MRI, that old filler was still sitting in place, sometimes years later.

As for non-HA fillers like Sculptra or Radiesse? They don’t dissolve with enzymes. Your body has to slowly absorb them over time, which can take years.

Your Body Vs. Filler: What Really Breaks It Down

Some fillers last longer because your body doesn’t always break them down efficiently.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers require an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which your body naturally produces, but only in small amounts.

Your body doesn’t actively clear filler unless there’s a trigger, like inflammation from an injection, injury, or immune response.

Once that fades, so does the breakdown process. That’s why old filler can linger for years, especially if it was placed deep or in areas with minimal enzyme exposure.

What Really Impacts How Long Your Filler Lasts

Not all filler is created equal. Some dissolve faster; others hang on for the long haul. These are the main factors that determine what happens:

  1. Filler Type
Only hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Non-HA fillers like Sculptra or Radiesse must be metabolized naturally, which can take years.
  2. Crosslinking & Density
Some HA fillers are designed to last longer by being more tightly bound. Products like Juvederm are great for structural support, but much more resistant to breakdown.
  3. Placement Depth
Fillers injected deeper into the face have less exposure to your body’s enzymes and blood flow, meaning they break down more slowly, if at all.
  4. Your Body’s Chemistry
Everyone metabolizes filler differently. Genetics, immune activity, and your natural production of hyaluronidase all influence how quickly (or slowly) your filler fades.
  5. Encapsulation or Migration
Sometimes, filler becomes trapped in scar tissue or migrates to unintended areas. This can make it harder to dissolve, even with enzyme injections, and may distort your natural contours in the meantime.

Just because a filler is labeled “temporary” doesn’t mean your body treats it that way.

If something still feels puffy or “off” long after your injection, it might not be aging, it might be filler. And that’s something we can help you assess, safely.

You Can Always Take It Back: The Appeal of Dissolvable Filler

The best results aren’t just beautiful, they’re reversible.

That’s why I often recommend dissolvable fillers, especially for areas like the under-eyes and lips. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers give you flexibility and control. If something doesn’t settle quite right or your goals change, we can adjust safely.

For first-timers, or anyone recovering from a past filler mistake, that peace of mind is everything.

“Doesn’t filler just make your face look bigger over time?”

Yes, it can, especially when old filler isn’t dissolved before adding more. That puffiness or heaviness? It’s often just migrated product, not aging.

The beauty of HA filler is that we can safely hit reset. You’re not stuck, and you don’t have to settle for results that no longer feel like you.

What Are the Benefits of Getting Fillers That Can Be Dissolved?

Dissolvable fillers offer peace of mind, not just at the time of injection, but for years to come. Here’s why I (and so many of my long-term clients) prefer them:

  • It’s your safety net.
If something looks off, whether it’s asymmetry, migration, or unexpected puffiness, we can address it quickly and safely.

  • It’s completely customizable.
With dissolvable fillers, we can layer treatments gradually. Subtle tweaks over time often yield the most natural, undetectable results. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing the right thing at the right time.

  • It protects your long-term aesthetic.
Accumulated filler can lead to distortion, puffiness, and a look that just doesn’t age well. Choosing a dissolvable filler, and dissolving old product when necessary, keeps your face fresh, natural, and true to you.

At The Skin Company, we don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” injections or permanent filler decisions made in a 15-minute visit. We collaborate with you, because your face, your aging journey, and your confidence deserve that kind of care.

The Dissolving Process: What It’s Really Like

Woman standing in front of a bathroom mirror, gently touching the sides of her neck while examining her reflection with a thoughtful expression.

Filler dissolving doesn’t get talked about enough, and when it does, it’s often made to sound shameful.. The truth? Sometimes it’s smooth and simple.

Other times, it’s a journey. What matters most is knowing what to expect and working with someone who knows how to guide you through it.

Natural Dissolving (aka Doing Nothing)

Yes, some fillers dissolve naturally, but it can take 1 to 4 years, sometimes longer. That 6–12 month timeline? Often unrealistic. I’ve seen filler still present 5 to 7 years later.

Natural breakdown isn’t always clean.

Filler can migrate, settle unevenly, or linger in unexpected areas, especially under the eyes or around the mouth. If your face feels puffy or “off,” it might not be aging, it could be old filler.

Assisted Dissolving With Hylenex (Hyaluronidase)

Hylenex is a fast-acting enzyme that safely dissolves HA-based fillers, often within hours. It gives us control to remove what’s no longer serving you, without disrupting the rest of your face.

Multiple sessions may be needed for layered or migrated filler. Swelling, bruising, and temporary volume loss are normal. Sometimes, dissolving reveals the natural volume underneath, but done right, it doesn’t take your face away, it brings it back.

Is Aftercare Different When You’re Dissolving Fillers?

Absolutely, and it’s one of the most important things we educate our clients about before moving forward.

Dissolving filler triggers a more reactive response than injecting it.

Hylenex actively breaks down filler, often in sensitive, inflamed areas, leading to more swelling, tenderness, and sometimes emotional discomfort as your face adjusts.

Here’s what I recommend for post-dissolving care:

  • Avoid NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) for 24–48 hours before and after. They can thin the blood and increase bruising.
  • Use ice compresses (gently!) to reduce swelling. Just 10 minutes at a time, on and off, for the first day.
  • Sleep upright for the first two nights if possible. Gravity is your friend here.
  • Be patient. Some asymmetry or lumpiness can occur as the filler breaks down unevenly, especially in areas like the lips or under-eyes. This usually resolves with time or follow-up sessions.

Dissolving filler isn’t a one-and-done, it requires follow-up. We’ll reassess your results, confirm full breakdown, and decide if or when re-injection makes sense.

Sometimes it’s a reset. Sometimes it’s a step toward something better. Either way, we’re with you, because it’s not just about how you look, but how you feel in your skin.

When It Comes to Filler, Who You Trust Changes Everything

A smiling woman in a lavender outfit sits in a treatment chair holding a handheld mirror, while a blonde provider in black discusses her treatment.

The wrong hands can turn a simple fix into a long-term problem.

Dissolving isn’t just a “technical” service. It requires judgment, restraint, and empathy. Without experience, providers can dissolve too much, too little, or in the wrong plane altogether, leading to irregularities, volume loss, or worse, scar tissue.

Why Clients Trust The Skin Company

At The Skin Company, we treat dissolving the same way we treat injecting: with precision, intention, and zero shortcuts.

  • Every dilution is hand-mixed by our providers, not preloaded or rushed. That might sound minor, but in this industry, that’s what separates soft dissolving from facial deflation.
  • We only use Hylenex when it’s absolutely necessary, and we always apply it conservatively. This minimizes risk and helps preserve your natural facial structure.
  • Our injectors are registered nurses and medically trained specialists who re-certify regularly and train obsessively. We don’t just follow trends, we set the bar higher every time.
  • And above all, we’re honest to a fault.
We’ll never talk you into filler.
We’ll never gloss over side effects.
We’ll never promise what your face can’t deliver.

We’re proud to be the second opinion people turn to when they’ve been burned somewhere else. Not because we offer magic, but because we offer something far more rare in aesthetics: trust.

Still Wondering If You Should Wait It Out Or Dissolve?

If you’re reading this section, chances are you’re not just casually curious, you’re feeling something. Maybe your face looks a little fuller than it used to.

Maybe your under-eyes seem puffy, or your smile isn’t sitting the way it once did. Or maybe you’re just not sure what’s changed, you just know something feels… off.

You’re not alone in that feeling. Here are a few of the usual questions I hear from clients who are trying to decide whether to wait it out or take action:

Does Naturally Dissolving Mean Doing Nothing?

Yes, but it could take years.

If you’re dealing with hyaluronic acid (HA) filler, your body might break it down eventually. But we’ve seen filler still sitting there 5 to 7 years later, especially in deeper planes or under the eyes.

Sometimes it fades evenly. Sometimes it migrates. And sometimes it just stays put.

Can Filler Still Be Seen On Mri Years Later?

Absolutely.

We’ve reviewed scans showing clearly retained filler, long after the visible effects were gone. Just because you think it’s dissolved doesn’t mean it’s actually gone. It may have moved, or integrated into the surrounding tissue.

Is It Better To Dissolve It Early?

If it migrated or looks off, yes.

Catching early migration (especially under the eyes or around the mouth) helps preserve your natural facial contours.

The longer unwanted filler sits in place, the harder it is to dissolve cleanly, and the more likely you’ll need multiple sessions.

I’m Afraid Dissolving Will Damage My Natural Tissue.

Hylenex can temporarily impact your body’s natural hyaluronic acid, but it regenerates. When used conservatively by trained providers, the risk of permanent change is incredibly low. Our goal is always preservation, not erasure.

You deserve a face that feels like home. Whether that means dissolving filler, adjusting placement, or simply learning more about your options, we’re here to guide, not pressure.

Fixing Faces And Restoring Confidence: The Skin Company Way

If you’re a health-conscious woman over 35 who’s starting to suspect that your filler may be doing more harm than good, you’re in the right place.

You’re not overthinking it. You’re not being vain. And most importantly, you’re not stuck.

At The Skin Company, we’ve helped hundreds of women unravel their filler stories and start fresh, with transparency, expert-level precision, and total respect for their natural features.

Because sometimes the best aesthetic decision isn’t adding more, it’s knowing when to reset.
