We hope you can feel confident and ready for your treatment by the end of this blog!
What are facial fillers?
Aging isn’t always kind to your face. Over the years, you lose fat that gives your face fullness and volume. Facial fillers, or dermal fillers, are gel-like injectable treatments that can help to improve the appearance of your skin. They add volume to areas of the face that have lost collagen, such as the cheeks or lips, and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. Many facial fillers are available, but we use hyaluronic acid filler from the Juvéderm and Restylane filler lines at The Skin Company.
Dermal fillers can accomplish the following:
- Restore volume to sunken cheeks
- Diminish vertical lip lines
- Plump lips
- Smooth chin creases
- Define facial features
What can I expect during the consultation process?
The consultation is an essential part of the facial filler process because it gives you a chance to learn more about the treatment, share your treatment goals with your provider, and receive their treatment recommendation. During your consultation, your injector will go over your medical history and conduct a physical examination of your skin. They will also discuss your goals for treatment and develop a customized plan to help you achieve your desired results. Consultations at The Skin Company are complimentary and are always the first step in your treatment plan.
What type of anesthesia is used for facial fillers?
Facial fillers are usually performed with local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the injection site. At The Skin Company, we use a topical numbing cream to help reduce any discomfort. The numbing cream should be applied 30-45 minutes before treatment to experience comfort during the treatment.
Will I experience bruising?
Every patient responds to filler differently; however, some degree of bruising should always be expected. Any bruising that you experience will likely resolve within a week. We recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen for two weeks before your appointment to minimize bruising. Bruising occurs when blood vessels break and blood pools into the surrounding tissue. Typically, it is a temporary side effect that resolves within a week or two.
How long does the procedure take?
The actual procedure takes around 20 minutes, but we allow 30 minutes for your appointment time to ensure that you have plenty of time to ask questions and relax before and after your treatment. Aftercare is also essential, and we will go over that with you at the end of your appointment.
What are the pre-treatment instructions?
There are a few things to keep in mind to prepare for your filler appointment. First, before your appointment, apply a topical numbing cream for 30-45 minutes to the injection site. The numbing cream will ease any discomfort. Plan your social calendar wisely and allow for several days or more of potential swelling, tenderness, and bruising. If you have an active cold sore/fever blister, canker sore, or shingles, you will need to postpone your treatment. If you are prone to developing cold sores/fever blisters or shingles, contact your provider at The Skin Company one week before your treatment for recommendations.
There are also quite a few things to avoid before your filler procedure. First, avoid dental work for at least two weeks before and after your appointment to avoid the risk of infection and moving fillers from the injection site. Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen two weeks before your appointment, and avoid alcoholic beverages 48 hours before treatment to reduce the risk of bruising. Lastly, avoid vaccinations two weeks before your appointment and two weeks after. This will reduce your risk of experiencing an adverse reaction.
What are the post-treatment instructions?
For 24-48 hours after your filler appointment, you may experience mild discomfort and tenderness, and it is common to experience bruising and/or swelling. Apply ice to the area for a brief period following treatment to minimize swelling. Resist touching or massaging the treated area; be gentle when you cleanse your face and avoid facial massages, lasers, waxing, and anything near the face, like dental procedures, for two weeks post-treatment. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours post-treatment. You will also need to avoid extreme cold or heat in the area for 48 hours post-treatment, so plan wisely.
When will I see results, and how long will they last?
You will see more fullness or smoother skin immediately or within a couple of days. However, the filler can take up to two weeks to soften and settle. Fillers can last from six months to more than a year, depending on which product you are treated with, how much your injector uses, and how quickly your body metabolizes the product.
In summary, there are many ways to prepare for your facial filler appointment, but the number one thing you can do is plan ahead. Review all of the pre-treatment instructions from your provider and follow each instruction completely. Plan for downtime, and make sure your other medical and aesthetic appointments do not conflict with your filler appointment. If you’re ready to move forward and book your facial filler appointment, start with a consultation at The Skin Company.
