How Long Does Filler Really Last? A Breakdown by Product & Area
“How long will this last?” is one of the most common questions we hear during filler consultations at The Skin Company. The honest answer is that it depends — on the product used, the area treated, your metabolism, and even your activity level. Below, we break down what to actually expect from the dermal fillers we offer, so you can plan your appointments (and your budget) with confidence.
Why Filler Longevity Varies So Much
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are gradually broken down by the body’s natural enzymes over time. Several factors speed this process up or slow it down:
- Treatment area — high-movement zones like the lips metabolize filler faster than low-movement areas like the cheeks
- Product formulation — thicker, more cross-linked gels (like those designed for cheeks and jawline) tend to last longer than softer formulas designed for delicate areas
- Metabolism and activity level — higher metabolic rates and frequent cardio can shorten filler lifespan
- Amount injected — larger volumes generally take longer to fully dissolve
Lip Filler: 6–9 Months
Lips are one of the most metabolically active areas of the face, which is why lip filler — whether Juvéderm Ultra XC or Restylane Kysse — tends to have the shortest lifespan of any filler treatment. Most patients see results soften around the six-month mark and choose to refresh between six and nine months for consistent shape.
Under-Eye (Tear Trough) Filler: 9–12 Months
Because the under-eye area is thin-skinned and delicate, providers use softer HA formulas here, often Restylane-family products. These tend to last closer to a year, though results can vary based on how much natural volume loss is being corrected.
Cheek and Midface Filler: 12–18 Months
Cheek augmentation typically uses thicker, structural fillers like Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft/Contour, designed to lift and add volume rather than just fill fine lines. Because this area has less muscle movement and the product is more robust, results often last well over a year.
Jawline and Chin Filler: 12–18 Months
Similar to the cheeks, jawline and chin contouring use more structured, denser fillers such as Juvéderm Volux, which was specifically engineered for structural definition. These treatments hold up well over time, especially in areas with minimal repetitive motion.
Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines: 9–12 Months
These smile-line and mouth-corner areas see moderate movement throughout the day, so filler here — often Restylane Defyne or Refyne, designed to flex with expression — typically lasts closer to a year before a touch-up is recommended.
SkinVive (Skin Quality, Not Volume): 4–6 Months
SkinVive is a newer injectable microdroplet treatment used to hydrate and improve skin quality (texture, tone, and glow) rather than add structural volume. Because it’s distributed differently under the skin, it metabolizes faster and is typically refreshed every four to six months.
Getting the Most Out of Your Filler
At The Skin Company, our injectors — including owner Maria Kane, RN, Dr. Sheila Boyle, and Michelle — take a “less is more” approach, using the right product and amount for your anatomy rather than over-filling. This not only produces more natural results, it also tends to help filler age gracefully rather than migrating or looking obviously “done” as it wears off.
If you’re local to Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Parker, Lone Tree, or Highlands Ranch and you’re not sure which product or area is right for you, an in-person consultation is the best way to get a personalized recommendation and cost estimate.
