Avoid retinoids, sun exposure, waxing, and makeup before your HydraFacial for the safest, most effective results. Proper prep reduces irritation and maximizes glow.
HydraFacials deliver serious results, but only if your skin is prepped correctly. Whether it’s your first time or you’re looking to get the most out of your next session, skipping the wrong steps can leave your skin irritated or underwhelmed.
The Skin Company walks clients through prep and aftercare to ensure glowing, confident results every time.
Let’s walk through exactly what to avoid, what to do, and how to time your treatments for your best skin yet.
What Makes HydraFacial Different And Totally Worth It

There’s a reason HydraFacial has earned its reputation as the go-to treatment for men and women who want visible results without the downtime or drama.
It’s not just another “spa facial.” HydraFacial is a medical-grade, multi-step treatment that uses vortex suction to deeply cleanse, exfoliate, extract impurities, and infuse your skin with potent serums, all in one sitting.
What I love most about HydraFacial is that it doesn’t ask your skin to “bounce back” from a harsh procedure. It meets your skin where it’s at, whether you’re dealing with dryness, dullness, fine lines, or breakouts, and gives it exactly what it needs to look clearer, smoother, and brighter, without ever tipping it into irritation.
Who Is HydraFacial For?
If your skin feels clogged, rough, tired, or just off, HydraFacial is one of the most intelligent ways to reset it. It’s especially effective for:
- Congested pores or blackheads
- Uneven texture
- Dry, flaky patches
- Fine lines and dullness
- Hyperpigmentation or mild acne
- Skin that needs a glow-up before a big event
HydraFacial fits into that rhythm beautifully. It’s fast, effective, and doesn’t require hiding out at home with peeling skin or redness.
How Often Should You Get One?
For maintenance and prevention, I recommend a HydraFacial every 4 to 6 weeks. Think of it as a non-negotiable part of your skincare rhythm, like going to the gym for your face.
If you’ve got a special occasion coming up, a wedding, photoshoot, or even a first date, book it 1 to 2 days beforehand for maximum glow.
Who Should Pause Or Adjust?
HydraFacial is gentle, but it’s still a medical-grade treatment.
If you’re pregnant, we can absolutely adjust the protocol using pregnancy-safe serums. If you’re actively healing from a sunburn, breakout, or skin infection, we’ll likely recommend postponing until your skin is in a healthier place to receive the treatment.
This is where I always come back to education.
We won’t just “do the thing”, we’ll walk you through what’s safe, what’s smart, and what’s worth waiting for. Your long-term results matter more than checking off a box.
Types of HydraFacials We Offer at The Skin Company

Because no two faces (or seasons, or hormones) are the same, we offer three versions of HydraFacial, each one fully customized:
Express HydraFacial
This streamlined treatment focuses on cleansing, gentle exfoliation, and hydration, perfect for a quick glow-up during lunch or between errands. It’s ideal for maintenance or as an intro to medical-grade skincare.
Signature HydraFacial
The classic three-step protocol: cleanse, extract, and hydrate. Great for first-timers or anyone who wants a no-fuss skin reset.
Deluxe HydraFacial
Includes targeted boosters to address specific concerns like pigmentation, fine lines, or acne, plus LED light therapy to calm inflammation or stimulate collagen.
Platinum HydraFacial
Our most comprehensive option. We begin with lymphatic drainage to depuff and detox, follow with the full HydraFacial protocol, and finish with boosters and LED.
Regardless of which one you choose, we build each session based on your skin’s actual condition, not a one-size-fits-all checklist.
We often adjust product concentrations, wand tips, and booster serums based on your skin’s current needs, cycle, or lifestyle.
Do You Really Need To Prepare For A Hydrafacial?
Yes, if you want results that are worth your time and money, preparation matters.
A HydraFacial might be non-invasive, but it’s still an advanced, treatment. It uses Vortex fusion technology and powerful serums to exfoliate, extract, and infuse hydration, so your skin needs to be in the right condition to receive it.
This isn’t a sheet mask from the drugstore. It’s medical-grade care. And just like you wouldn’t show up to a workout after pulling an all-nighter and skipping breakfast, your skin needs a little prep to perform well too.
Why Proper Prep Matters
If you’re someone with sensitive skin, even a single drop of the wrong product the night before your treatment can lead to stinging or flushing.
And if you’re brand new to HydraFacial, prepping helps prevent unexpected surprises like redness, purging, or post-treatment dryness.
With the right prep, a HydraFacial can help decongest and calm, but if your skin is in an active flare or recently over-exfoliated, we may need to adjust or reschedule.
Even concerns like, “Will the suction bruise my face?” or “Can I wear makeup after?” usually trace back to improper prep, not the treatment itself.
What To Do In The Days Before Your Appointment
There’s no need to overhaul your life before a HydraFacial. But small changes make a big difference in how your skin responds, and how long your glow lasts.
Avoid These Mistakes
- Retinols, Tretinoin, AHAs/BHAs:
Pause these active ingredients at least 2–3 days before your appointment if you’re a first-timer. They increase sensitivity and can lead to over-exfoliation. - Benzoyl peroxide or acne medications:
These can dry or irritate the skin. If you’re using prescription topicals, talk with your provider, we may adjust your protocol. - Waxing or scrubs:
Avoid any physical exfoliation or hair removal procedures for 3–5 days before. Microtears in the skin make it vulnerable during extractions. - Spray tans or self-tanners:
These can clog your pores and create patchy results when exfoliated away during the treatment. Wait at least 3–5 days post-tan. - Excessive sun exposure:
Sunburned or overly sensitized skin is a no-go. Ideally, stay out of direct sun 72 hours before your facial. - Other treatments (like laser or microneedling):
Treatments such as IPL, SkinVive, or chemical peels should be spaced out. Your skin can only handle so much stimulation in a short window.
If you’ve recently had any of our advanced treatments, like IPL or microneedling, we’ll create a custom timeline for your HydraFacial so everything works together, not against your glow.
Do These Things Instead
- Hydrate from the inside out.
Drinking plenty of water in the 2–3 days before your facial can improve the treatment’s effectiveness. Hydrated skin = better serum absorption. - Stick to gentle skincare.
Use a mild cleanser, barrier-repair moisturizer, and sunscreen. Now’s not the time to “try something new” or layer on five-step acid routines. - Talk to your provider about your medications.
If you’re on antibiotics, spironolactone, or hormonal treatments, bring it up at your consult. Some medications can increase skin reactivity. - Tell us everything.
If you’re pregnant, have cold sores, eczema, or rosacea flares, we’ll adjust accordingly, or recommend waiting if necessary.
HydraFacial is a collaborative treatment. When we prep together, you’re not just getting a facial, you’re getting a strategy. One that’s built around your skin, your season of life, and your long-term results.
Let’s make your glow last.
What To Do On The Day Of Your Appointment
The day of your HydraFacial should feel simple, calm, and easy. You’ve already done the heavy lifting by prepping in advance, now it’s time to just show up and let us take care of the rest.
From First-Timer Nerves to Aftercare: We’ve Got You Covered

Over the years, I’ve heard every HydraFacial question you can think of. Here’s how I answer the ones that come up again and again, both in the treatment room and from curious first-timers.
Do I Need To Stop My Skincare Routine?
Yes, but only temporarily. Pause any actives like retinoids, exfoliating acids, or acne treatments 2–3 days before your facial.
You can resume most of your routine a day or two after, depending on your provider’s recommendation.
Can I Get A Hydrafacial Before A Big Event Like My Wedding?
Absolutely, but don’t make your first HydraFacial the day before your wedding.
Try one 4–6 weeks ahead of time to see how your skin responds. If all goes well, we can schedule a final glow session 2 days before your event.
Will I Purge After?
Most of our clients don’t, but if you have a lot of congestion or are acne-prone, you might notice a few breakouts as your skin detoxes. It’s usually mild, short-lived, and a sign that things are clearing out, not getting worse.
Does It Hurt?
Not at all. Clients often describe it as a cooling, light suction, kind of like a tiny vacuum running over your face. You may feel a bit of tingling during the exfoliation step, but the treatment is designed to be relaxing, not aggressive.
Can I Wear Makeup After?
Technically, yes. But I always recommend giving your skin at least the rest of the day to breathe.
You just had a deep clean and an infusion of high-quality serums, let them do their thing without layering on foundation or powder.
Will The Suction Bruise Me?
No, it shouldn’t bruise you. The HydraFacial machine is calibrated to be both effective and gentle, and we adjust intensity based on your comfort level.
Can I Work Out After?
It’s best to wait 24 hours before hitting the gym, sauna, or hot yoga. Excess sweating and heat can disrupt the freshly infused serums and increase post-treatment redness.
