Decolletage

Thanks to scoop-necks and plunging necklines, though, the chest tends to see a lot of sun exposure and be a telltale area when it comes to aging.

“I think I’d rather have an Adam’s apple,” a client once told me as she displayed the creped skin on her chest. “These wrinkles and spots make me look so un-feminine.” Like many women, this client had long spent her energy (and skincare budget) on her face. It just hadn’t occurred to her to worry as much about anywhere else.

I find that this is a common pattern: Women who are vigilant about the aging of their face are often taken by surprise when the skin on their chests starts to crease and spot. Thanks to scoop-necks and plunging necklines, though, the chest tends to see a lot of sun exposure and be a telltale area when it comes to aging. This is also an area that can be very expensive and impractical to “fix” with standard medical aesthetic procedures, because it’s such a big piece of your skin’s real estate. Here are some suggestions for improving the appearance of the skin on the chest in other ways:
• Cleanse and moisturize. When it comes to bedtime and morning regimens, treat the skin on your chest and neck as you would your face. Cleanse it gently, moisturize it well.
• Always use sunblock. Hello, dead horse? Sorry I’m beating you. But I and others in my field continually reiterate the importance of sunblock because, well, it’s important. It’s your #1 line of defense against skin cancer and premature signs of aging.
• Spray perfumes on clothes, not skin. Perfumes and products with fragrances can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. This photosensitivity can lead to sun damage such as age spots.
• Use collagen-stimulating products. Products containing vitamin A (like retinols and Retin-A) are your collagen-boosting friends. Remember, however, that these increase your sensitivity to sun, so take extra care with sun protection when you’re using them.
• Use décolletage-care products. Yes, there are products designed specifically for your chest, and many of them are worth their weight in gold.
