Coolsculpting is a good solution for those who are looking to slim down and get rid of stubborn fat without undergoing invasive surgery. Before getting this treatment, your Body Sculpting Specialist will need to determine if you are a candidate. A good candidate for CoolSculpting has subcutaneous fat (fat you can grab or tug on) in one of the FDA-cleared areas: under the chin and jawline areas, thighs, abdomen and flanks, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks, and upper arms. Every body is different, which is why it is important for your Body Sculpting Specialist to work with you to develop a customized treatment plan for your body.

1. What is CoolSculpting and how does it work?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses cryolipolysis, or fat freezing, to safely remove unwanted fat bulges. This treatment removes fat without the discomfort of surgery or the downtime associated with typical liposuction procedures. Coolsculpting offers an easy and safe procedure that can remove fat from the body without leaving scars.

During the CoolSculpting treatment, a gel pad is applied to the treatment area so that the fat cells will be cooled as they are frozen. The applicator is placed over the treatment area and then controlled cooling causes targeted fat cells to crystallize. These crystallized fat cells die due to intracellular fat cell death. Over time, the body naturally processes these dead cells and eventually eliminates them through natural metabolic pathways. This results in a noticeable reduction of fat from treated areas after the initial treatment and a smaller volume on re-treatment sessions.

Each area can be treated multiple times, with results that will improve after each treatment. Your Body Sculpting Specialist will determine how many treatments are necessary based on the amount of fat to be treated and your body type (the shape you are in). Typically it takes about three treatments at four weeks apart to see desired results.

2. How to Prepare for Your Treatment

There are a few things you can do before your CoolSculpting treatment in order to maximize results and minimize discomfort.

  1. Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood thinners for two weeks before treatment to avoid a chance of bruising.
  2. Stop smoking for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. Nicotine makes the body more sensitive to cryolipolysis and can increase discomfort during the treatment session.
  3. Eat a meal about four hours before your scheduled treatment time in order to avoid nausea.
  4. Wear clothing that is cool and loose-fitting, or request a robe from your Body Sculpting Specialist. Your body may experience some mild swelling following CoolSculpting. It is best to wear clothing that will accommodate that.

3. What to Expect During Your Treatment

To start your treatment, the applicator is placed over the treatment area and then controlled cooling causes targeted fat cells to crystallize. Cooling causes a decrease in blood supply. This can make fat cells starved of oxygen, and they will die. You may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, or cramping at the treatment site. These sensations go away as the area becomes numb.

During your treatment, you’ll be able to watch a movie or listen to music on your headphones. You may feel some coolness at first, but then the area should feel numb and you should not feel much discomfort. The treatment usually takes between one to two hours for each area. Treatment times vary depending on what part of the body you are having treated. Each treatment can take as little as 35 minutes per treatment area—it’s so fast, you can go back to work when you’re done!

4. What to Expect After Your Treatment: Recovery time, possible side effects, and other considerations

After your treatment, your body naturally processes and eliminates the dead fat cells in the treated area! Remember, CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment. This treatment is a non-surgical way of reducing the fat in those stubborn areas that may be resistant to diet and exercise. Following treatment, patients can expect up to 20%-25% reduction of fat in the treated area. CoolSculpting results show in the first month following treatment, but optimal effects are usually attained during four and six weeks and continue to reveal themselves for the next six months after treatment. This treatment is the only FDA-cleared fat reduction technology that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat.

Typical side effects following treatment include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after treating the chin area.
