Going anywhere fun this summer? Eyeing new clothes for the trip? Trying to lose a few pounds first? Getting a pedicure maybe? Most women I know don’t travel without doing one or more of these things before they go. Cave-spelunking and mountain-summit trips notwithstanding, we all try to look our best when we travel. Professional skincare services definitely give you more bang for your buck than all of the above, but timing is crucial and waiting until the last minute is usually not a good idea.
Many women come to my office for laser hair removal just prior to a beach vacation. It’s definitely worth a thousand sunrise mimosas to not worry about shaving your legs, underarms, or bikini area during your seaside stay (and ever after). The unfortunate thing is that a client should keep the treated area out of the sun for a couple of weeks to avoid irritation and burning. Who wants to avoid the sun while at the ocean? Also, though most women have little to no irritation of the skin from the procedure itself, an unlucky few have redness for a few days. Replace stubble with redness? Uh, no, thanks.
How about a photofacial? Because it reduces wrinkles, improves skin texture, lightens brown discolorations, minimizes rosacea and sun damage, and tightens and firms skin on the face, neck, and brow—I feel pretty confident claiming a photofacial unleashes a woman’s beauty better than any pedicure or new dress could. But this is another skincare service you don’t want to try just before leaving on a trip. In the days following a photofacial, the treated skin is especially vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. Unless you want to spend your entire vacation in the shade or sporting a zinc-heavy sunscreen, don’t put off this service until just before you leave.
Without giving a laundry list, I must say that many of the most wonderful , wow-factor skincare services shouldn’t be done at the eleventh hour before travel. Botox can cause minor bruising. So can cosmetic fillers for deep wrinkles. Skin-lightening peels, which greatly improve the appearance of hyper-pigmented skin, can have a solid week of redness. More important, they result in the peeling away of surface skin for about 2-5 days. Keep in mind, too, that many professional skincare services aren’t a one-and-done deal. Some, like laser hair removal, must be completed through a series of spaced-apart treatments. In other words, you won’t be sporting the final results in the days immediately following your first or second treatment.
That said, I can’t tell you how moving it is to watch a woman experience the transformative power of these amazing services. In a sense, they offer a vacation of their own—a vacation from being underwhelmed by what’s in the mirror. With so many skincare services to give you more wow than any new outfit ever could, the time to get ready for that July or August vacation is now!
